One License Plate Only

Rep. Harper

Utah has made a significant financial investment in license plate reading technology. The technology enables law enforcement personnel to read the front license plates of oncoming traffic while in a parked car.

Law enforcement personnel can use readers to identify stolen cars in parking lots. If a car without a front license plate were to back into a parking space, identification would not be possible.

In addition, front license plates make it possible to identify cars that run red lights and/or take left hand turns illegally with the use of traffic cameras. Furthermore, requiring license plates on the front and back of all cars makes it easier for citizens who have witnessed a crime to report it. All of these practices are instrumental in helping law enforcement personnel keep Utah’s citizens safe from criminal behavior.
